Posted February 26th, 2010 in SEO

If you do a search on Google for ‘ascii art’ you will see that Google now shows their logo in ASCII art. This is not the first time Google has experienced ASCII art in their search results. There have been a number of Adwords ads that have had ASCII art in them as pictured below.

Using ASCII art in ad’s helped improve CTR as the ad’s stood out amongst the other text only ads.

If you have any ASCII art you would like to contribute; please leave your master piece in the comments on this page. Maybe we can do a prize or something for the best piece of ASCII art posted.

Adora Svitak, the youngest speaker at TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design). A very smart 12 year old speaking about how adults should listen to the views of kids.

TED is a small nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. Since then its scope has become ever broader. Along with the annual TED Conference in Long Beach, California, and the TEDGlobal conference in Oxford UK, TED includes the award-winning TEDTalks video site, the Open Translation Program, the new TEDx community program, this year’s TEDIndia Conference and the annual TED Prize.

I feel like kids are getting smarter and smarter. Do you think adults can learn from kids?

Twitter reaches 75m users but growth seems to be slowing

Posted February 5th, 2010 in Uncategorized

Twitters user base has reached 75m users but as only 15m of them are active according to RJ Metrics. What does this mean for Twitter?

Websites, companies and products have a certain life cycle which starts with introduction then growth then maturity then decline. This graph shows that Twitter has reached maturity and may already be showing signs of decline.

What ever Twitter becomes it will still have a strong following as users are now integrating it into their other social bookmarking and networking platforms and will struggle to change to another service. I like Twitter and do not think I will be leaving anytime soon. What are your thoughts on this trend in monthly new users?

Is page loading speed more important than relevance to Google?

Posted February 2nd, 2010 in SEO

There has been a lot of talk recently about Google factoring in page load speed into their ranking algorithm. How much this effects rankings and if it is weighted more than relevance is still a question that needs to be answered.

Here is a video of Matt Cutts explaining how page speed influences your rankings and if speed is now more important than relevance.

A tool that you can use to test web page loading speed is Webpagetest this will show you each part of your code and how long that part takes to load. You can then use this information to streamline that part of your code to improve overall page loading speed. There is one question that still remains, will this lead to webmasters sacrificing their fancy flash graphics and complex coding to impress Google with faster load speeds?
